3 Real Ways to Save Money on Accommodations When You Travel

When it comes to saving money on accommodations when you travel, you may not be able to follow the standard advice of traveling during the off-season or staying in places that are far from the city and all the popular tourist attractions you want to visit. The good news is that you can save money on your accommodations when you travel by adjusting your plans only slightly, or by trying a few other simple tips and tricks. Note a few suggestions before you book your next trip.

1. Check a day or two around your schedule

While you may not be able to travel during certain seasons, can you adjust your schedule by just a day or two? Very often you can save money on accommodations by arriving and leaving on a particular day, when hotels and other locations are empty and will lower the price of rooms to attract more business. When checking prices, note if you save money by arriving on Friday night rather than Saturday, or by leaving Monday morning rather than Sunday. This small adjustment can mean quite a bit of savings in some cases.

2. Apply for their credit card

When you apply for a store credit card, you often get discounts on the spot, even if the application is declined. The same is true for credit cards that are offered by hotels and other accommodations. If they offer you a credit card application, you may be eligible for a discount on your room for that trip even if the application is denied. If the application is approved, using their credit card when you travel can mean earning points that in turn will give you a discount on their accommodations.

3. Stay at the same location repeatedly

If you're a frequent customer of one hotel or other such accommodation, you may be eligible for discounts with each stay or once every year, or however the accommodation structures their "frequent guest" rewards program. You may need to actually join such a program, but even if you don't, you might ask if you are eligible for a discount after staying at a certain hotel or other location so many times. They may be happy to offer you a discount just to keep the regular business at their facility and to keep a regular customer happy. If such rewards and discounts are not offered, never hesitate to outright ask about them.
